The wonderful world of social media is your daily window to your close friends and your more distant ones, your real and virtual ones, your favorite celebrities and, essentially, everything else in the universe. Whether you stay connected to your online communities 24 hours a day or just take a quick peek at them every once in a while, you probably have encountered some of these mysterious expressions and #hashtags, that aren’t necessarily easy to understand at first glance.
Thankfully, Crème Mag is always there to help out, so here is a little glossary of common social media vernacular to use on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and any other !
Caturday : Fusion of “Cat” and “Saturday”, a keyword used on Saturdays to promote cat-related pictures or content.
DM / PM : Respectively mean “Direct Message” and “Private Message”, variations of different social media platforms’ feature for messaging other users.
F4F : Means “Follow for follow”, a keyword used mostly on Twitter and Instagram to express reciprocity in the action of following another user (in other words, subscribing to their page or content).
FBF / TBT : Respectively mean “Flashback Friday” and “Throwback Thursday”, keywords used on Fridays and Thursdays to promote nostalgic content.
FF : Means “Follow Friday”, a keyword used mostly on Twitter, YouTube and Instagram as a shout out to other users whose content you just subscribed to.
HT : Means “Hat tip”, a keyword used to express respect or approval to another user or particular content.
ICYMI : Means “In case you missed it”, a keyword used to look back on a past event or trend, to summarize or comment it.
IRL : Means “In real life”, a keyword used to refer to – you guessed it – life outside of the Internet.
L4L : Means “Like for like”, a keyword used mostly on Facebook and Instagram to express reciprocity in the action of liking another user’s page or content.
MCM / WCW : Respectively mean “Man crush Monday” and “Woman crush Wednesday”, keywords used on Mondays and Wednesdays to promote content related to your favorite celebrities.
MM : Means “Music Monday”, a keyword used on Mondays to promote musical content.
#NoFilter : A keyword used mostly on Instagram to signify that a photo has not been retouched.
NSFW : Means “Not safe for work”, a keyword used to signify that something is not work/school appropriate and shouldn’t be clicked on in these environments.
OOTD : Means “Outfit of the day”, a keyword used mostly on Instagram to promote pictures of your daily outfits.
POTD : Means “Photo of the day”, a keyword used mostly on Instagram to promote a picture that was taken the same day.
QOTD : Means “Quote of the day”, a keyword used to promote an inspiring or meaningful quote.
Regram / RG : An expression used on Instagram to signify that a picture was originally posted by another user.
Retweet / RT : An expression used on Twitter to signify that a Tweet (a message or phrase) was originally posted by another user ; or to invite others to share your own Tweet or content on their page.
SS : Means “Selfie Sunday”, a keyword used on Sundays to promote self-portraits.
TFTF : Means “Thanks for the follow”, a keyword used to express gratitude towards another user for subscribing to your page or content.
TIL : Means “Today I learned”, a keyword used to promote interesting information that you just learned about.
TMB : Means “Tweet me back”, an expression used on Twitter to invite other users to respond or react to a particular Tweet.
