BookTok and the book industry

The hashtag #BookTok, which has gathered several tens of billions of organic views on the platform, has helped to boost sales of printed books.

 

This hashtag is used by a community of readers to share their opinions, reviews, and book recommendations. This allows TikTok users to make discoveries in an inclusive and supportive environment.

 

Following this success, publishers have approached TikTokers specialized in this type of content, also known as “Booktokers”. In fact, 2021 was the year with the highest number of physical book sales recorded since 2004!* Social media and TikTok videos are said to have played a key role in the increase in sales. Indigo, the Canadian bookstore chain, even launched its virtual book club on the social network.

FoodTok and the food industry

When we see the proliferation of “recipes and tastings” type videos, there’s no doubt that the food industry is asserting itself on the platform. It’s not surprising that the hashtag #FoodTok has generated over ten billion views to date.

 

Almost no one could have missed the viral recipe for Feta Pasta, shared by Finnish food blogger Jenni Häyrinen and made famous at the beginning of 2021, even causing a shortage of feta in several supermarkets.

 

Another popular recipe is the #salmonbowl. A recipe based on rice, salmon, and seaweed that propelled influencer Emily Mariko to the origin of the trending video.
